Out and About

These are Bill's new work-out buddies at the gym. No Bill hasn't
shrunk.  These guys on either side of Bill can dead lift 500 lbs a
piece. And don't worry, Bill won't be dancing at the PCC
anytime soon.

Sunset with Friends and what do I do all day?

The BYUH senior missionaries getting together at a gorgeous home nestled
in the hills above Ted's Bakery. The conversation, food and the sunset were superb. 

We could even see some whales in the distance.

So what do I do all day? I became certified in administering the MBTI Personality Assessment along with
a coworker Emma. We help students to identify their personality preferences to help them in
choosing a major, a future job, and dealing with life in general.

I was able to meet Dr. Gary Weist.  He was vacationing in Hawaii and his friend, my former employer
Dr. Gerritsen, suggested he contact BYUH while here.  We had a very productive meeting with Dr. Wiest
 and he said that he would see what he could do to help to get  an on-campus dental clinic to serve our
 IWORK students.  We plan to double the amount of these needy students from the Pacific Rim
 in the next few years to help "build the Kingdom" throughout the world. He generously offered the help of the
LDS Academy of Dentistry to help equip the dental office. The major hurdle now will be to how
to get around the strict Hawaiian dental licensing laws for dentists and hygienists. I may be
gone before any of this happens if it does happen,, but it is at least exciting to help get the ball rolling.
Oh and  I found out Dr. Wiest is the brother of our good friend Mark Wiest.

BILL TURNS 70.

We had a 70th birthday party for Bill at his office at lunchtime
so his coworkers could come.

And my coworkers came also.

Also we had some of our senior missionary friends come.  

We all enjoyed the reminiscing of days gone.

VISITORS AND COWORKERS

We were excited to see our friends Susan and Brad Hertz. Though their stay was short
and quite rainy we had fun and they brought much needed supplies; yarn, bike clothing,
and most importantly Bill's birthday gift from his sister Charlotte, delicious, homemade
 gum drop cake.

This is my coworker, student Gantsolmon Dugasaren, but we just call her
Ganaa. We have nearly 40 Mongolian students here at BYUH. Though proselyting
is not allowed in Mongolia, people interested in the Church can be taught in homes. We
are able to get missionary visas with the help of The Oyunlag School in Mongolia,
that sponsors the missionaries to teach English in their school. They get free
English teachers that speak Mongolian and we get missionaries into the country.

Saturday we drove to Kailua to pick up our bikes and these 2 cute coworkers
tagged along. We dropped them off at the Windward Mall and the Safeway,
which they appreciated since they don't have cars. On the way home we stopped to
try a new shrimp truck. Did you know Koreans like to eat shrimp legs, shell and all
but the tail?  Much less messy then the Americans. Lilia says those parts of
the shrimp are very good for the skin and I believe her as her skin is beautiful. Kaitlyn
in the middle from Utah had coconut shrimp that was already peeled.

Graduation Day

BYU HAWAII GRADUATION DAY

This is Josh Jung. Josh is his "American" name because most haoles have trouble pronouncing
his Korean name. He is a regular in our office and planning to go and live in Herriman with his brother.
He is a talented and smart young man and we will miss him.

This gives you an idea how many leis you can put on one person. Look closely at the lei closest
to her face. It is made out of $100 bills. I thought they got carried away at East High. Pres. Tanner
asked the audience at the commencement not to applaud or celebrate any names during the
ceremony. Most people pretty much honored that except for a kazoo and some whistling and
a few shout outs. Elder Oaks was the commencement speaker.

We came home to find ourselves locked in our apartment. Fortunately our downstairs
neighbors were home and went and got the landlord's son-in-law to get us out
and replace the door knob. No trouble keeping the mission rules here in Kahuku. With all the
feral roosters around we get the wake up call sometimes as early as 4 am. Our neighbors
call it going "cuckoo in Kahuku." Too bad Bill didn't bring a twelve guage.

BACK IN THE SADDLE AGAIN

After 3 months without bikes we were definitely going through withdrawal. We stopped by a bike rental shop at Turtle Bay and asked if they ever sell their rentals. Just so happened that the owner had just ordered a fleet of Fezarri bikes from Utah Valley to replace their bikes next month. That fact and the fact that we are missionaries (the owner is a BYUH alum)  got us a screaming deal; 2 bikes, 2 helmets, 2 bike pumps and a car bike rack and bike lock for about half a month's rent! When we rolled out of their I felt like a kid on Christmas morning.
We are storing our "new" bikes inside as bikes have a tendency
to disappear around here. People say they are not really stolen only
that someone "borrows" them. The trouble is that they are never
returned to the place where they were borrowed from.

Thank Goodness for Costco.

This is what it looks like when 4 missionaries go to Costco.
These are new neighbors the Treygaskes from Arizona. They are running
the bowling alley on campus. They brought their sports car with them and so
they didn't have any room for their purchases. We spent most of the day
at Costco, Walmart, and Bed Bath and Beyond. They were good sports as
they even had some things on their laps and between them on the way home.
Even though Bill is glad for our hatchback, he is a little jealous of their Mazda Miata.

This is the office I work in and I was surprised when Paul brought
in his still-surfing father who is  my cousin Hilma Stratford's nephew.
I am impressed that he surfed here as the large North Shore waves are not
for the weak-kneed.

We have been upgraded to a bigger flat. Our dear friends Jeff and Wendy Sessions
 suddenly had to return home for Jeff's cancer treatment. We are sad to see them go. They offered
to let us move in their upstairs apt and we took them up on it as long as they
would let us take care of their loose ends and deal with what they had to leave behind.  We
love it up here. There are two roomy bedrooms, much more closet space and
and a larger kitchen and living room. We feel very fortunate since our new flat is
twice the size of our downstairs apt. And the biggest bonus; we have
cross-ventilation which is a must in the summer.
